Mobile phone detection cameras caught 168 drivers using mobile phones in the New England region since they were implemented in March 2020.
Drivers captured on camera doing the wrong thing receive a $349 fine, or a $464 fine in a school zone, and five demerit points, or 10 during double demerit periods.
According to Transport NSW, mobile phone detection cameras in the region have checked 47,234 vehicles within the New England and North West.
Tara McCarthy, Transport NSW Deputy Secretary for Safety, Environment and Regulation the mobile phone cameras are world-first technology targeting illegal mobile phone use.
"Lives are being lost on NSW roads because of drivers illegally using their mobile phones, " Ms McCarthy said, "Simply taking your eyes off the road for longer than two seconds, doubles the risk of a crash."
NSW Transport made the decision not to reveal the location of mobile phone detection cameras to deter people from breaking the law and putting lives at risk.
A total of more than $19 million dollars has been generated from the new cameras since March equalling approximately 43,000 fines issued statewide.
Penalty notices issued to company cars who cannot confirm the driver do not accrue demerit points however the business is issued a fine 5 times the original amount.
Labour roads spokesman John Graham told the Sydney Morning Herald the government is turning a blind eye to dangerous drivers due to the amount of revenue company fines generate.
All the money received from mobile phone related fines go directly into the Community Road Safety Fund and NSW Transport say it is used for road safety programs and school zones flashing lights.
