22-year-old man arrested after stolen car chase allegedly reaches 190km/h

A 22-year-old man has been charged after a high-speed police chase of a stolen vehicle near Tamworth on Saturday the 1st August, that allegedly reached 190km/h.


At around 11:20 am on Saturday the 1st August police tried to stop the silver Kia Cerato that was allegedly travelling at 128km/h on the New England Highway at Timbumburi.


Police tried several times to pull the driver over yet the car did not stop instead, the car increased speed as the police took chase.


It is alleged the vehicle reached speeds of 190km/h in a 100km/h zone while travelling through South Tamworth before veering off the road and crashing into a ditch.


The driver managed to get out of the crashed car and police allege he tried to escape on foot.


After a short police pursuit, the man was arrested and taken to Armidale police station where he was charged with multiple offences including two counts of exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, two counts of driving while disqualified, exceeding the speed limit by more than 10km/h, two counts of dangerous driving and police pursuit.


When the police checked the license and registration of the silver car they found it matched a car reported stolen from Blacktown in Sydney at the end of July.


The young man was refused bail and will appear before Armidale Local Court on Monday 10 October 2020.
