Arts centre feedback 'overwhelmingly positive'

Feedback on the proposed Performing Arts Centre and Cultural Precinct has been overwhelmingly positive, according to council.

Council’s manager of entertainment venues Peter Ross said the proposed venue would provide a hub for the arts after the lease with The Capitol finishes in 2023.

"We have had the business case and concept design out on exhibition, that closed and we have compiled a report to go to council to, hopefully, approve the business case," he said.

"This is a major project and it will need funding from the three tiers of government."

Mr Ross said they had listened to the feedback from residents.

"We had 74 submissions online ... and 70 of those were overwhelmingly positive," he said.

"We did four face-to-face sessions as well and probably saw about 50 people.

"Some of them [concerns] were around the drought and why we were doing a project at this time, but of course the funding we are seeking is from different pots so if we don't go for that funding from cultural infrastructure then some other town will."

Mr Ross said the venue would see more entertainment acts, including mid-scale shows and ballets, as well as provide a hub for cultural events.

He added that the price tag of more than $120 million might seem hefty, but there is a lot to the building.

Mr Ross said there will be a 600-seat theatre, a 200-seat studio, rehearsal spaces, outdoor events spaces, a new space for the ABC, a home for the Conservatorim of Music and a new cafe.

"We want to do it properly so it lasts," he said.

The council is set to vote on the proposed plan at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Mr Ross added that it would be disappointing if the plan was pushed back.
