NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers are warning residents to be vigilant following a spate of recent grass fires in the Liverpool Range District area.
Yesterday afternoon (February 7) 20 firefighters used water bombing aircraft and bulldozers to bring a 50ha bush and grassland fire under control 45km south west of Quirindi at Cattle Creek.
The fire status has been updated to 'under control', however, communities east of the fireground on the New England Highway from Aberdeen to Quirindi will continue to see a significant amount of smoke from the fire ground.
Firefighters will continue to use favourable conditions to work towards containing the fire and will continue constructing and strengthening containment lines. Heavy plant, back burning operations and aircraft will be utilised across the fireground NSW RFS Superintendent Paul McGrath said.
“Grass growth is flourishing after a good amount of rainfall earlier in the year, NSW RFS Superintendent Paul McGrath urged residents and property owners to be aware of the heightened risk and prepare themselves and their property for the potential grass fires in the area.
“Grass fires can be particularly dangerous because they start and spread quickly, potentially destroying not only homes and stock but also lives and livelihoods,” NSW RFS Superintendent Paul McGrath said.
“Farmers can help prevent fire from entering or leaving their properties by establishing firebreaks around paddocks, homes and other valuable assets like sheds and equipment.”
NSW RFS Superintendent Paul McGrath said preparations should also include filling in a Bush Fire Survival Plan and having a conversation about what the household will do in the event of a fire.
“Bush Fire Survival Plans are available for free from www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or from any Fire Control Centre.
“They are simple and quick to complete and can assist in making decisions that can protect you, your home and your family from bush and grass fires.”
