Construction on new Dungowan Dam to start by end of year

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson visits the site of the proposed Dungowan Dam with Water Minister Melinda Pavey and Tamworth Regional Council Mayor, Cr Col Murray.

The construction of the new Dungowan Dam and the upgrade of the pipeline from the dam to Tamworth continues to move forward with the announcement of key staff.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson welcomed the appointment of the project team responsible for delivering the plan as part of the Critical Needs Water legislation introduced last year.

"Last year we passed legislation which gave us the powers to prioritize projects including the Chaffey to Tamworth pipeline project, in order to secure water for our local communities suffering from this unprecedented drought," he said.

“This is about getting on with the job and the Dam Delivery Team is overseeing the planning and development of the new Dungowan Dam, with preliminary construction to begin late this year.

“I want to keep the ball rolling and I will be working hard with this team, who are backed by the legislation, to advance the start of community consultation."

Mr Anderson said WaterNSW is developing a community engagement plan to keep local communities, customers and other stakeholders up to date throughout this important project.

“We’ve had a little bit of relief with recent rainfalls, but we must keep the focus on the construction process of a new Dungowan Dam to ensure Tamworth and our region has a secure water supply for everyone for years to come," he added.

“WaterNSW is also fast-tracking the expressions of interest process to get the process moving.

“Everyone has to get better at water management, we don’t ever want to be in this kind of situation ever again."
