First positive COVID-19 case for Tamworth in over a year

Tamworth Local Government Area has recorded today its first positive case of COVID-19 since early 2020.

Hunter New England Health (HNEH) announced the active case of COVID-19 on Monday, not yet establishing the level of risk the case has posed to the wider community. The positive case is under investigation, with information on exposure sites or potential lockdowns to be announced later today.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said in a statement that the case is currently isolating at a property outside of Tamworth.

Significant work is now being done to identify the risk to our community. I sincerely hope that it is low risk and that we can avoid lockdown”, said Mr Anderson.

“That is all the information I have at this stage; I will keep you updated as more information comes to hand.”

“Stay safe, get tested, get vaccinated”, He said.

HNEH said now it’s time to get tested.

Dr David Durrheim, Public Health Controller, HNELHD COVID-19 response said we need to increase testing numbers in the Tamworth region.

“We urge all Tamworth LGA residents, even those with the mildest symptoms, to please get a test,” said Dr Durrheim.

The news comes after Gunnedah recorded 1 positive COVID-19 case last week, as well as Glen Innes having now recorded 2 cases in the latest outbreak.
