Homeless Connect returns

Now in its eleventh year, the Tamworth Homeless Connect will again be providing free community support this month to those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or are just doing it tough.

The event is a one stop shop offering connection, food, hairdressing, entertainment, clothing and blankets, and support accessing birth certificates.

Katrina Higgins from Joblink Plus said organisers are expecting record numbers at this year’s event.

“Last year we had record numbers with just over 1,300 people. However, this year we know there’s already been close to 900 people accessing family and homelessness support through Tamworth Family Support Services, so we expect the numbers to rise again this year,” she said.

The purpose of Homeless Connect is to connect the services that can help community members by bringing them together in one location.

“All the organisation in attendance work together to make sure people are accessing what they need, whether it is dental for their children, employment opportunities, or education,” Ms Higgins said.

One of the participating organisations is One of a Kind, who will be providing donated clothes, linen, blankets, sheets, toys, and shoes on the day.

“Getting involved gives us all a great sense of satisfaction,” told Georgia McRae from One of a Kind.

“I have volunteers that don’t normally come in on a Thursday that have put their hands up to help on the day. It’s safe to say we all feel more valued in the team and community helping at this event.”

The event is made possible thanks to support from Foodbank, Flourish, Hannafords Coaches, Homesnorth, Joblink Plus, One of a Kind Community Support, Rapid Relief, Tamworth Buslines, Tamworth Regional Council, and TFSS.
