'Just stay home': City leaders urge residents to follow rules

"Stay home" - that was the message from Tamworth’s leaders on Tuesday morning. It follows police issuing a penalty infringement notice in the region. About 8.15pm on Monday, officers from Oxley Police District stopped a Toyota Kluger on Station Street, Quirindi, and spoke with the 37-year-old female driver and a 46-year-old male passenger. During a search of the vehicle, police located methylamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The man was issued a court attendance notice for possessing prohibited drug and possession of equipment for administering prohibited drugs. Further inquiries revealed the woman had been given a warning about non-essential travel about 10.30am while in Muswellbrook. They were each issued with a $1000 PIN and a move-on direction.

Mayor Col Murray, Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson and Oxley Police District Commander Kylie Endemi urged residents to stay at home and follow the law this Easter weekend. Superintendent Endemi said there was no excuse to not follow the rules, and police can and would be issuing fines for non-compliance. She acknowledged it was hard to not be seeing family and loved ones during the holiday period, but everyone was in the same boat and it was crucial that each person plays their role in containing the pandemic. "We will be on the roads, but we don't want to see you on the roads," Superintendent Endemi said. "It's a sacrifice that we all have to make. "We are finding police are still interacting with a small percentage of the community who are not doing the right thing. We are issuing many warnings to people." Mr Anderson said people should not be trying to find ways to get around the rules. It was as simple as if the reason isn't essential as defined by the government, then don't do it.
