Man charged over alleged grooming, sexual abuse

Detectives have charged a man in Tamworth over the alleged grooming of a teenage girl and sexual abuse of another girl. In December 2019, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation following reports a teenage girl had been sexually abused by a man known to her. During the investigation, police received information that another girl had been groomed by a man she met on social media. Following inquiries, detectives arrested an 18-year-old man at Tamworth Police Station just before 2pm on Wednesday. "The man was charged with have sexual intercourse with child (between 10 and 14 years), meet child under 14 years groomed for sexual activity and custody of knife in public place," a police statement said. "Police will allege in court that the man sexually abused a 13-year-old girl at a home in Bowraville in November 2019. "It will be further alleged the man groomed another 13-year-old girl via social media in October 2019." The man appeared at Tamworth Local Court on Thursday, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at Kempsey Local Court on May 20.
