It was an "unbelievable moment" for one singer when she was crowned the Star Maker in front of thousands of country music fans at the 41st grand final.

Townsville singer, songwriter Sammy White took home the title on Sunday night.

The 2020 Toyota Star Maker competition proved to be a momentous night for women in country music with nine of the ten finalists female.

Sammy, who performed an exciting rendition of her #5 iTunes Country Chart song Drowning My Sorrows, was met with massive applause from the crowd as she was announced the overall winner of the 2020 Star Maker competition.

"It has not registered just yet," she said. "It has been really exciting."

Sammy started in the talent quest scene at nine years of age and has been chasing a career in country music ever since.

She decided to enter the Star Maker, for the second time in 2020, as she found herself to be in the right place personally and professionally.

"I don't have a job, I don't have any ties - so I thought if I am going to enter, now is a good time," Sammy said.

"I am a songwriter at the end of the day, for me the thing I love about country music is that you can tell a story - it's like a diary.

"Growing up, I was a pretty shy kid, so I always turned to writing."

Sammy said the process has been fantastic, and although in the leadup she may have been stressed, when it came to stepping onto the stage, she was calm.

"For the past three years, the [winners] have all been mates," she added.

"It has been cool to be a part of that family."

Sammy said she is ready for the next 12 months, whatever it may bring.

The 2019 winner Blake O’Connor said the possibilities are endless when someone enters the Toyota Star Maker.

“Star Maker has opened doors and given me opportunities to show more people than ever my songs," he said.

"It has put me on a greater platform to build a fan base for my career, and I have made friendships and met people that I wouldn’t have been exposed to if it wasn’t for Star Maker.

“This year has been a massive step forward for my career, and it’s one I’m very grateful for.”
