Despite the usual Anzac Day services being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, residents are being encouraged to still honour the servicemen and women of Australia.
Vonny Taynton, secretary of the Tamworth RSL Sub-Branch, said Anzac Day services have been held in Australia since 1916 except for their cancellation in 1942 following government orders in response to the threat from Japanese forces.
"This year, because of an enemy that cannot be mitigated by military intelligence and valour, ANZAC Day commemorative events have again been cancelled across the nation," she said.
"The Tamworth RSL Sub-Branch has always been prominent in the Tamworth community in saluting the legacy of those sons and daughters who have protected our freedoms in the many conflicts in which they have been engaged.
"It is, therefore, with deep sadness that the Sub-Branch has cancelled the Dawn Service in ANZAC Park, the Peel Street March, the Main Commemoration Service in the Tamworth War Memorial Town Hall and the Members’ Luncheon at West League Club."
Ms Taynton said the sub-branch thank all of those individuals and organisations that have made plans to commemorate the legacy.
"We acknowledge not only the time and effort involved but the sense of tradition that underpins preparation for commemorative events," she added.
"The flypast, at this stage, will go ahead along Peel Street from Bourke Street to Fitzroy Street on April 25 and we ask that the Tamworth community takes a minute’s silence following the flypast of the Hawk jet at 10.10am to remember those who have served their country through sacrifice and courage."
