Tamworth Blood Donor Centre is on the hunt for “150 plasma donations every week this month”, according to Lifeblood spokesperson Jemma Falkenmire.
This International Plasma Awareness Week, which runs from 4-8 October 2021, plasma donations are recognised as critical in saving and improving lives.
Lifeblood spokesperson Jemma Falkenmire said plasma was considered a modern medical miracle by many, because it’s the last line of defence for many health conditions.
“We owe an enormous thank you to Tamworth locals who donated plasma during the pandemic and ensured that Australian patients continued to receive the plasma and plasma medications they needed,” said Lifeblood spokesperson Jemma Falkenmire.
“But despite locals from Tamworth donating more plasma than ever before, these patients need more people on their support team to get them through treatment,”
“Demand for plasma nationally is 10 per cent higher than this time last year and continuing to grow.”
An aging population, coupled with the discovery of new uses for plasma products, means Australia is one of the world’s largest users of plasma medicines.
“Donating plasma is simple. Just sit back and relax on a comfy couch for 45 minutes – it really is that easy.” Miss Falkenmire said.
“Donating even once, or just once more, will help ensure Australian patients get the medicines they need.”
