How Do You Sleep

Love Goes (2019)

An emotive song about resentment, "How Do You Sleep?" finds Sam Smith addressing a deceiving lover. The heartbroken Smith wonders how his cheating partner can live with himself. The video was directed by Grant Singer (The Weeknd, Lorde) with choreography by Parris Goebel. The clip finds Smith showing some sharp moves as he performs a dance routine with a troupe of supporting shirtless male dancers.

I'm Ready

Love Goes (2020)

Sam Smith and Demi Lovato have been close friends for a long time. The pair have repeatedly expressed admiration for each other's work, but this is the first time they've collaborated on music. The duet came about after their mutual songwriter, Savan Kotecha, invited Lovato to the studio to record with Smith. "I'm Ready" is a powerful, gospel choir-filled anthem in which Smith and Lovato sing about craving a lover. Their bed feels cold and they are ready for the emotional risks that a romance entails.

Writings On The Wall

Single Release Only (2015)

Sam Smith disclosed some spectre-tacular news on September 8, 2015 when he revealed he had recorded the theme song for the 24th James Bond movie Spectre. Smith was the first British male solo artist to lay down a Bond theme tune since Tom Jones recorded "Thunderball" for the 1965 film of the same name. This debuted at #1 on the UK singles chart, the first ever James Bond theme song to reach the summit. Before Smith's chart-topper, the two highest-ranking Bond themes were Adele's "Skyfall" and Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill," which both peaked at #2.

7.

To Die For

Love Goes (2020)

Sam Smith wrote the heartfelt ballad with his go-to collaborator Jimmy Napes and the Norwegian production duo Stargate. The four previously teamed up for Smith's 2017 single "Too Good At Goodbyes." The singer said that they wrote the song in Los Angeles "during a time of self-discovery and heartbreak." Sam Smith intended this to be the title track of his third album, but when the coronavirus pandemic started spreading worldwide, the singer felt it was insensitive to use the word "die" in the title.

6.

Promises

Love Goes (2018)

This steamy tune finds Calvin Harris joining forces with Sam Smith. The British white soul singer croons about wanting a hookup that probably won't lead to anything more. The song appeared as a bonus track on Smith's 2020 album Love Goes.

5.

Diamonds

Love Goes (2020)

Released as the second single from Love Goes, this glittering dance tune marks a departure in style from the acoustic-y pop-soul music that Sam Smith is best known for. He explained that after the release date of his album was pushed back because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it gave him a fresh perspective on the record and impacted the recording of the tracks. "Every time I went into the studio, I promised myself I would shoot for the stars and have no limitations," Smith said.

4.

Dancing With A Stranger

Love Goes (2019)

This R&B-influenced pop number finds Sam Smith hooking up with Normani. The collaboration came about totally by chance. The British singer was writing with Stargate and Jimmy Napes in a Los Angeles studio while the former Fifth Harmony member was recording in the next room over. The two decided to join forces. Smith explained that he had just gone through a breakup and the last thing he wanted to do was write a sad song. The singer had been listening to sexy music that made he feel better, so he wanted to pen a song about going to clubs and kissing people.

3.

I'm Not The Only One

In The Lonely Hour (2014)

The song tells a heartbreaking story that Smith observed first hand. "It's about a marriage that I've been an observer of," he explained to Digital Spy. "I put myself into the woman's shoes."

"The person I wrote it with, we both knew them and we just vibed off each other," Smith added. "We both had really strong opinions on what the woman was doing. It's quite a complex song. When you listen to it you think it's just bashing a guy for cheating, but it's not, it actually talks more about how the woman's a mug. She knows she's not the only one, but she's never going to leave. I think that's wrong."

2.

Too Good At Goodbyes

The Thrill Of It All (2017)

Sam Smith's debut album In the Lonely Hour was full of songs about unrequited love and loneliness. Three years later the Brit dropped the lead single from his sophomore record, which finds him still singing about failing relationships. Smith explained that he drew on personal experience for the breakup anthem's lyrics. He said: "This song is about a relationship I was in and it's basically about getting good at getting dumped. It's been a long while since I've put any music out and I feel that this first single sets the tone of what is to come".

1.

Stay With Me

In The Lonely Hour (2014)

In the Lonely Hour finds Smith tackling his unsuccessful love life. This track finds him singing about a person he fell for one night, but who doesn't return the same sentiment. This won for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 2015 Grammy Awards. Smith performed the song at the ceremony, where he also won for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album.

When Smith collected his trophy for Record of the Year, he said, "I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys."
