This song finds Ariana pairing up with Toronto R&B singer The Weeknd, who is best known for penning explicit tunes about his sexual exploits. The two singers trade verses about keeping the girl happy by loving her harder. The Weekend said of the song, "It was a great song," he said, "but it was a little generic. The song's sound both pays homage to and updates 1980s Michael Jackson. The upbeat instrumentation contrasts with the downbeat lyrics, which tell the story of a girl who is the victim of childhood sexual abuse. The Weeknd performed this song at the Grammy Awards in 2016, where he was nominated for seven awards (he won two).

The Weeknd addresses a past relationship. He expresses regret for running away from the romance and breaking her heart. There are several clues that the The Weeknd is referencing his relationship with Bella Hadid, whom he dated on and off between 2015 and 2019. During the first and second verses he recalls an encounter with an ex in a club. The Weeknd explained his disturbing bandaged look,
"The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated," he said.

After Hours (2020)
One of the more vulnerable songs on After Hours, this synth-pop jam finds The Weeknd addressing his romantic partner. He tells the female he can see in her eyes she's distressed despite her efforts not to show it. This is one of several tracks on After Hours that likely references The Weeknd's tumultuous relationship with model Bella Hadid. The Weeknd is feeling remorseful as he's been serially unfaithful to his girl. He tries to reassure her she is the only one for him.

Fifty Shades Of Grey (2014)
One of two of The Weeknd's contributions to the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, this song finds Abel Tesfaye impressed by his girl's sexual performance. The primary instrumentation on this song is piano and strings. It was one of the few hits of the time with mainly acoustic instruments in the mix. This song picked up the award for Best R&B Performance and The Weeknd also won Best Urban Contemporary Album for Beauty Behind The Madness.

The spooky-sounding song finds The Weeknd singing of a secret relationship, possibly with a celebrity. The singer is all to aware that now because he is famous, the hills have eyes – i.e., everyone is watching him. The Weeknd rose to fame quite rapidly in 2015, and in this song he takes the voice of a celebrity who is driven by self-destructive hedonism and has no qualms about it. The song paints of picture of what could happen if he becomes a victim of his success.

Starboy (2016)
David Bowie was the Starman, but The Weeknd claims the title of "Starboy" on the title track to his 2016 album. But while Bowie was telling a celestial story, The Weeknd is referring to his celebrity, giving us a look at his life of luxury and calling out the haters. "Made your whole year in a week," he claims. The Weeknd revealed that the Starboy album title was inspired by David Bowie. "I just love Bowie, I think he's the ultimate inventor," he said.

Starboy (2016)
The Weeknd sings here of a girl who has had bad experiences in previous relationships and the singer is attempting to reassure her. Daft Punk join The Weeknd on the hook. The French duo also co-wrote the song, their second Starboy collaboration following the album's title track. The Weeknd performed this song with Daft Punk at the Grammy Awards in 2017 on a set that looked like the Fortress of Solitude.

Beauty Behind The Madness (2015)
This song finds Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye describing a passionate affair with a woman that he knows is no good for him, but is enjoying too much to stop. His lyrics describing the numbing sensation of being in love are crooned over pop synths courtesy of Swedish pop songwriter Max Martin. The Weeknd performed this at the Grammy Awards in 2016, where it was up for Best Pop Solo Performance and Record Of The Year. It didn't win either award, but Beauty Behind The Madness picked up Best Urban Contemporary Album and "Earned It" won for Best R&B Performance.

Blinding Lights
After Hours (2019)
This won Video of the Year at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. At the socially distanced ceremony, The Weeknd performed the song from the observation deck at the Edge building in New York City in an elaborate production number with a helicopter, fireworks, and "blinding" spotlights. The song broke the record for the most time spent in the Top 5 of the Hot 100. "Blinding Lights" eclipsed Chainsmokers' "Closer" and Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" when it clocked up its 28th week in the top tier. The Weeknd closed out his set at the 2021 Super Bowl with this song.
