Top Ten Binge-worthy Shows to Watch during Isolation

Updated: May 9, 2020

There's more than enough time on our hands to watch TV right now...and by that I mean watch-every-single-episode-until-your-eyes-hurt-and-you-think-you're-living-in-the-show.

adj. Describing a television show or mini-series, typically available through an online streaming service, which is of a high enough quality to be watched all the way through in succession.

Thank you Urban Dictionary for that definition.

Check out our picks for the Top Ten Binge-worthy shows to watch during isolation. A massive thanks to our listeners for helping out with this list!

10. ANIMATED

There are two television shows that deserve a mention for being the best for binge-watching. You've grown up with them, and can always cite your favourite episode.

The Simpsons

The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, and the longest-running American scripted prime-time television series. We've all had a moment where we can relate to the Simpsons. Gotta love dysfunctional families.

My favourite episode: Lisa on Ice (Season 6, Episode 8)

Family Guy

Did you know in 2009, Family Guy was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, the first time an animated series was nominated for the award since The Flintstones in 1961? Another American-family style animated sitcom like the Simpsons but with a much more edgy comedy style.

9. NETFLIX:

Orange is the New Black

The series is based on Piper Kerman's memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison (2010), about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison. Orange Is the New Black has become Netflix's most-watched original series.

You can't tell me you didn't binge this when each of the new series came out!

Black Mirror

Black Mirror is a British dystopian science fiction anthology television series that examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. Black Mirror can be very dark and satirical at times...but it's such a fascinating way to tell a story.

8. SCI-FI FAVS

Supernatural

Supernatural is the longest-running American live-action fantasy TV series and stars two brothers Sam and Dean as they hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings.

It's almost like the ultimate road trip TV series!

The X-FILES

The series revolves around FBI special agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) who investigate X-Files: marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder believes in existence of the paranormal while Scully, a medical doctor and a skeptic. This is an iconic sci-fi show of the 90s.

7. MEDICAL SHOWS:

Grey's Anatomy

We' ve definitely got some Grey's Anatomy fans here in Tamworth! Definitely the perfect kind of escapism show, with a bit of drama.

The series was the highest revenue-earning show on television, in terms of advertising, in the 2007–08 season; in 2017, it was ranked tenth on the list. In its fifteenth season Grey's Anatomy ranked as ABC's highest-rated drama.

Scrubs

Did you know that Scrubs even though it's a comedy, is widely renowned for being the most accurately depicted medical TV show?

Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs decided it was important to maintain factual accuracy if they were going to set a comedy in a hospital.

If you need to laugh...

Scrubs is the show for you.

6. COMEDY FAVS:

Brooklyn Nine Nine

This is such a great show and so easy to binge as it is 22 minutes of snappy humour from Captain Holt, the eccentric commanding officer, with his diverse and quirky team of odd detectives in Brooklyn, New York City.

The Office (US)

Adapted from the UK version of the television series, this show is another comedy with short episodes filmed in a mockumentary style.

5. AUSSIE STORIES:

Underbelly

We gotta show a bit of love to the Aussie shows and the true stories in the series Underbelly. The first series is based on the book Leadbelly: Inside Australia's Underworld, by journalists John Silvester and Andrew Rule.

Kath & Kim

Kath & Kim is an Australian television situation comedy created by the two stars Jane Turner and Gina Riley, who play the title characters of suburban mother Kath Day-Knight, and self-indulgent daughter Kim Craig.

4. TV SITCOMS:

Friends

Friends is a mainstay on Aussie television, one of those series that will never be forgotten.

I am episodes away from finishing this entire series.

You know the story, it's about six friends in their twenties and the ups and downs of working, relationships and live in New York. A classic TV sitcom for the ages.

The Big Bang Theory

This live-studio filmed TV series is centered on five characters living in Pasadena, California.

Leonard and Sheldon live together and are both physicists at Caltech; Penny, a waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall; and Leonard and Sheldon's similarly geeky and socially awkward friends and co-workers, aerospace engineer Howard and astrophysicist Raj. In total, Big Bang Theory won seven Emmy Awards from 46 nominations.

3. BRAND NEW:

Tiger King

Tiger King is a true crime doco miniseries about zookeeper, Joe Exotic and the small but intertwined society of big cat conservationists such as Carole Baskin, owner of Big Cat Rescue, and Joe Exotic, whom Baskin accuses of abusing and exploiting wild animals.

Tiger King was watched by 34.3 million people over its first ten days of release, ranking as one of Netflix's most successful releases to date.

2. 92.9 TEAM FAVS

A short survey of the office gave us these awesome suggestions:

Let's see if I can describe them in one sentence.

Schitt's Creek:

Rich family finds themselves broke and move to the country...Schitt's Creek.

One Tree Hill:

Hunky brothers rival each other on the school basketball team and in their romantic relationships.

Riverdale:

Teen drama series based on the Archie comic books based in a town that seems perfect but isn't.

Silicon Valley:

A funny show about a Silicon Valley engineer trying to build his own company called Pied Piper.

1. EPIC STORY ARCS: Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is tied for first as one of the most binge-worthy TV shows to watch of all time. Once you start down the rabbit hole, it's hard to come up for air until the whole series is over.

Nine noble families wage war against each other in order to gain control over the mythical land of Westeros. Meanwhile, a force is rising after millenniums and threatens the existence of living men.

The Sopranos

Tied for first alongside Game of Thrones as one of the most binge-worthy epic TV shows to watch. The Sopranos.

This show changed the way television series told stories. David Chase, brought to life Tony Soprano, an American mafia boss and ultimate antihero. It is an epic tale akin to Game of Thrones, merely set in a different time: 1990s New York.
